Civil Society Organizations Statement regarding Gaza crisis
by: Palestinian Civil Society
We, the representatives of civil society organizations and public committees, met in Ramallah on Saturday the 16th of June 2007, to affirm the following:
- We condemn what has happened in Gaza, which we consider to be a rebellion and completely against the democratic process, and we affirm the legality of the three Palestinian authorities.
- We believe the emergency state should be based on basic law, use legislation, and respect the order of law which includes controlling the actions of the armed militant groups, and giving space to the official security system according to the law, and also providing guarantees of human rights.
- We warn against the risks of engaging in an internal civil war, especially with the presence of different references and lack of recognition of the official organizations' legality.
- We call for the rejection of any results based on what happened in Gaza, and call for resuming dialogues based on the national agreement accord, including re-forming and activating PLO sub-organizations, and the rejection of any non-democratic means of resolving differences.
- We believe that what happened in Gaza will cause severe harm and will threaten the national agenda by separating Gaza Strip from the West Bank, leading to the implementation of the Israeli agenda which Sharon previously planned for.
- We re-affirm, what we have previously called for in several occasions, the reformation of the security system and force it under the rule of law, developing its role as law protectors in a way that guarantees human rights, freedoms, and stopping any revenge actions and targeting individuals and organizations both in Gaza and in the West Bank.
- We call for the unification of efforts towards ending the occupation. Meanwhile, we call for the international community to provide international protection to the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, under the United Nations' umbrella, based on the forth Geneva accord.
- We ask all types of visual, audio, and written media to stop inciting, abide by media law with its orders, and call for unity and the protection of citizens.
- We call for the legal system to fulfill its role in calling for the account and punishment of all individuals who commit crimes, preventing the exaggeration of those crimes or the absolving of responsibility within any agreement between the parties, as what has previously happened.
- We warn against transforming 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip into hostages to compromise with.
- We call for all governmental, non-governmental and international organizations to put forth more efforts and programs to ease the suffering of people, especially those who are sick, weak, poor and children in Palestinian society, especially in the Gaza Strip.
