Call for Action - Israeli settlers destroyed land planted through the Olive Tree Campaign

Category: Calls & Statements
Created: 21 November 2012

Field Attack 21Nov2012 1Settlers from the Israeli settlement of Carmel in the South of Hebron Hills have uprooted most of the 400 olive trees planted by the campaign earlier in 2012.

The attack was carried out by the settlers on Wednesday night, November 21, 2012. The following morning, a shepherd saw the destroyed trees and contacted the families and landowners about it.

It was obvious that the settlers took their time destroying everything on the land, and spraying racist graffiti and threats. They also used the term "Price Tag" which is a term used by the Israeli settlers for justification of acts of violence that aim to eliminate Palestinians, terrorize them, and destroy their livelihood.

Field Attack 21Nov2012 3Jamil Hoshyyeh (Abu Iyad), one of the affected farmers, complained about the destruction to the Israeli authorities, who filed the "incident" against "anonymous" and did not purse any investigation to catch the settlers who destroyed the land.

The area where the trees were destroyed is surveyed with at least one camera from the settlement. There are only a few settlers who live there. As such, it is logical that the Israeli Authorities could catch the offenders easily, but once again they act in favor and protection of the Israeli settlers.

Finally, 185 of the destroyed trees were sponsored by friends and partners from Denmark, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA.

In case you are from any of the mentioned countries we urge you to do some of the following:

  • Write a letter to your countries representative in Tel-Aviv asking for a visit to the destroyed fields and affected farmers. Contacts to the farmers can be made available after contacting the Olive Tree Campaign (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

  • Write a private and / or public (through news papers) letter to the Israeli representatives in your country, sharing the story of the farmers and seeking explanation for lack of investigation and failure to bring those responsible for the destruction to justice.

  • Write a letter of support to the farmers to let them know they are not left on their own in watching their livelihoods being destroyed.

  • Try to bring this story to light using your local newspapers, radio, TV stations or any other media tools.

  • Help in sponsoring the planting of more olive trees or call on your friends and other people you know to sponsor olive trees to be planted in fields that suffer the same type of risks.

International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian People - 29 Nov 2012

Category: Calls & Statements
Created: 15 November 2012

Dear friends, partners, and peace with justice activists,

In light of the escalating attacks of Israeli settlers and soldiers on Palestinian farmers, land and olive trees, as well as the coming Israeli elections which will clearly result in a very right wing and more aggressive government leading to increased apartheid and occupation measures against Palestinians;

We, the Joint Advocacy Initiative (JAI) of the East Jerusalem YMCA and YWCA of Palestine, call on our friends, partners, and peace with justice activists around the world to make a strong stand this year in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their just cause for freedom by expressing your call for real practical change and continued pressure on Israel to end the occupation.

On Thursday the 29th of November, the UN assigned International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian People, we call you to organize actions and activities of solidarity individually and/or with your Church congregation/group, YMCA/YWCA movement, solidarity group, university or school students…etc. You can also join actions and activities organized by Palestinian solidarity groups in your country or area.

Actions Suggested:

  • Protest in front of the Israeli embassies and diplomatic missions in your countries, to be held on that day.

  • Send clear individual or (preferably) collective letters to your Minister of Foreign Affairs calling for practical steps and policies to put pressure on Israel to force it to respect human rights and UN resolutions, stop its unjust practices against Palestinians, and abide by international law.

Below is a sample letter.

PLEASE This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (shortly), on any action you take or join in this regard, and responses you may receive. It is very IMPORTANT for us to keep records of such.

Sample letter:

Minister of Foreign Affairs

We receive official reports and trustful information from our partners and friends in the occupied Palestinian territories of ongoing Israeli settlers and soldiers’ attacks on Palestinian land, farmers, trees, and homes, as well as ongoing occupation practices including daily arrestments of Palestinians, land confiscation, and movement restrictions.

On the UN International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, we/I express our deep concern and call upon you, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and government to show support of the right of self-determination of the Palestinian people, and put pressure on Israel to respect human rights and UN resolutions, stop its unjust practices and violations of international law, and end its occupation to the Palestinian territories.

We/I highly appreciate your practical response and measures taken.

Sincerely,

Call for Actions - Olive Tree Campaign field invaded and Olive Trees uprooted

Jabaa 19July2012 119th, July 2012

On Thursday; July 19th. 2012, The Israeli Civil Administration (Israeli Military Occupation) invaded the lands of Olive Tree Campaign's beneficiaries Izzat Abu Latifeh and Mohammed Abu Subhieh from the village of Jab'a.

The Israelis arrived to the land early in the morning, they brought JCB Bulldozers, military and civil vehicles to the land and started the destruction. Short after that, Izzat Abu Latifeh heard from eyewitnesses that the Israelis are on his land, he rushed to the land and tried to stop the destruction, the Israeli military prevented him from getting on the field unless he presents his documents of ownership, once he brought his Jabaa 19July2012 2documents the Israelis left, but it was too late. The destroyed more than 50 trees planted through OTC in response to the Israeli destruction of Izzat's property on February 22nd 2011.

The Israelis have also uprooted the roots of the trees they cut down in February 2011 as these roots started growing again, and then the Bulldozers destroyed old terraces on the land that Izzats father built more than 70 years ago. All the destruction was done to make the land look abandoned and remove evidence that the land has been cultivated; a procedure that leads to Israel’s confiscation and annexation of the land.

Jabaa 19July2012 3For so long, Palestinians have witnessed Israel confiscating their property and declare it as state land (annexation). This policy against the Palestinians is deemed illegal under international law, it violates the Geneva conventions in Particular where article 47 states: 'Protected persons who are in occupied territory shall not be deprived, in any case or in any manner whatsoever, of the benefits of the present Convention by any change introduced, as the result of the occupation of a territory, into the institutions or government of the said territory, nor by any agreement concluded between the authorities of the occupied territories and the Occupying Power, nor by any annexation by the latter of the whole or part of the occupied territory'.

Despite the frustrations, pain and agony caused by this destruction, the OTC will continue supporting the farmers in Jab'a by planting sponsored olive trees on their property and help them in their olive harvest.

What can you do to help:

  1. Sponsor an olive tree through the OTC, we are planning to raise up to 8000 olive trees to be sponsored by friends and partners around the world, many of these trees will be planted in Jab'a. You can help by sponsoring the planting of one yourself or for your friends and family.
  2. Expose the complicity of JCB bulldozers in destroying Palestinians livelihood and join the Stop the Bulldozers Campaign.
  3. Write your representatives in Israel and demand they visit Jab'a and seek investigation on the continuous destruction and confiscation of Jab'a land.
  4. Write the Israeli representatives in your country seeking explanation for the destruction of Jab'a Land.
  5. During previous olive picking programs we helped farmers in the destroyed area in the harvest of their trees, in support of the family and to highlight different ways of Israeli destruction of Palestinians land. During The Olive Picking 2012, we are planning to help the affected farmers again by organizing an olive picking day on their field, you can join the olive picking program or encourage your friends and others to do so by sharing this link.
  6. Finally, you can try to bring this story to light using your local newspapers, radio, TV stations or any other media tools to bring the story to light.

Call for Actions - Olive Tree Campaign Field Attacked

Category: Calls & Statements
Created: 06 October 2012

On Saturday October 6th 2012, Salah family from Al Khader found out that more than 100 newly planted olive saplings in addition to 60 vine trees in an adjacent vineyard were cut down. The olive trees were among 300 olive trees planted on the Salah family's land (Dirar Abed Al Raheem Salah and Abdulhakim Salah) and 200 olive trees on the Nabhan family;s land. Both lands were planted on Monday, February 6th 2012 during the 2012 olive planting program.

OTC Field 7Oct2012 1

OTC Field 7Oct2012 2Link to news report: http://www.maannews.net/eng/ViewDetails.aspx?ID=526501

The vines which were cut down belong to Younis Mahfouzh Mousa, a farmer from Al Khader.

The owners of the attacked lands believe that it was settlers from the nearby Newe Dannyel Settlement which is about a hundred meters away. Further, they believe the Israeli military is complicit in this attack as the area is covered with Israeli military surveillance cameras, and is very close to the bypass road known as route 60 where military patrols move back and forth day and night.

OTC Field 7Oct2012 3This attack by settlers on Palestinians and their property comes as the olive harvest season begins. During this season Israeli settlers increase their attacks on Palestinians and olive trees in general. Between October 1st and 7th Israeli settlers have been involved in at least 5 attacks in addition to this one.

Also, the Independent Commission for Human Rights has reported that Israelis (settlers and military) have been involved in some 300 violations of Palestinians rights during the month of September in the Occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Finally, the olive trees that were chopped down were planted at Dirar Salah and were sponsored partially by 30 sponsors from USA, UK, Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan and Denmark. If you are from any of these countries or took part in the 2012 olive planting program please consider taking one of the following suggested actions:

  • Sponsor an olive tree or call on your friends and other people you know to sponsor olive trees to be planted in fields that suffer the same type of risks.

  • Write a letter to your countries representative in Tel Aviv, asking for a visit to the destroyed fields and affected farmers. Addresses of the foreign missions in Tel Aviv can be found here: http://www.science.co.il/embassies.asp

Write a private and/ or public (through news papers) letter to the Israeli representatives in your country, sharing the story of the farmers, seeking explanation for what happened, and find out if there is a way to call those vandals to account.

  • Try to bring this story to light using your local newspapers, radio, TV stations or any other media tools to shed light on the story.

  • Please let JAI know in case you have decided to do something about this loss.

64th Anniversary of Nakba

Category: Calls & Statements
Created: 14 May 2012

Nakba1948During this week in May, the Palestinian People are marking the 64th anniversary of Al-Nakba that resulted in the uprooting and the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people in addition to the destruction and obliteration of almost 530 Palestinian villages in historic Palestine. 750,000 Palestinians became refugees and were stripped of their lands and properties.

Today the Palestinian refugees, who amount to 7 million and live under very bad conditions, are still waiting to exercise their unalienable right of return and reparation in accordance with the UN resolution 194 and other relevant UN resolutions.

We consider the world community accountable to this right and situation.
We ask our friends in the world movements of the YMCA and YWCA, Churches and Church-related organizations as well as the Human Rights organizations and the peace and justice loving people worldwide, to share with us the determination to work for justice for the Palestinians by lobbying to enforce the international law on the Israeli- Palestinian conflict.

Nowadays conditions with the absence of any political progress and while around 2100 Palestinian political prisoners are on hunger strike for the last 28 days, some of which have lasted 77 days, all the peace loving forces are asked to be united to place Israel as the party responsible for the Nakba and the prisoners situation under all means of legal, ethical and economic measures to comply with the international Law and declarations.

You are all asked to act within your context with your governments calling for implementation the unalienable right of return of the Palestinian refugees, to show respect and accountability to the international law.

Your actions of solidarity are needed

Joint Advocacy Initiative
