Shakira cancels Israel concert after pressure from BDS

eop 4june2018 1Columbian star Shakira will not be performing in Tel Aviv this year following pressure from activists who support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) said in a statement yesterday that it "welcomes the announcement that Shakira will not be performing in Tel Aviv anytime soon, dashing Israel's hopes to use her name to art-wash its latest massacre in Gaza."

Israel approves 2,000 new illegal settlement homes in West Bank

eop 4june2018 2Israeli authorities on Wednesday approved construction of nearly 2,000 new illegal settlement homes in the occupied West Bank, including 92 a kilometre from a Bedouin village last week slated for demolition.

The decision by Israel's Civil Administration will allow 92 new homes in Kfar Adumim, near the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, whose demolition was approved by the Israeli High Court last week.

Local Bedouin leaders have condemned the development, which will be called Nofei Bereishit and will connect other illegal settlements with a planned education campus.

British arms exports to Israel reach record level

British defence contractors are selling record amounts of arms to Israel, new figures reveal, just days after it was confirmed that Prince William will represent the UK government on a visit to the country next month.

Figures from the Campaign Against Arms Trade reveal that last year the UK issued £221m worth of arms licences to defence companies exporting to Israel. This made Israel the UK’s eighth largest market for UK arms companies, a huge increase on the previous year's figure of £86m, itself a substantial rise on the £20m worth of arms licensed in 2015. In total, over the past five years, Israel has bought more than £350m worth of UK military hardware.
